This past week has seen the cladding go on …
The architraves painted {by me – don’t look too closely. They are not finished yet} …
And put up …
The roof insulation go in ….
And the wall insulation too …
The gyprock sheets go up …
and the laundry door go on but I didn’t get a photo of that.
The gyprock sheets are all ready now for my trusty uncle Ron to come next week and finish the gyprocking setting and sanding and all that gyprocky stuff. Then it’ll be me and the paint brush and, I’m hoping, some lovely, lovely helpful friends????
This week has also seen me in a spin as I’ve struggled with tile choices and vanity options, paver decisions, doors and kitchens. I can’t tell you how much research and time I’ve put into the planning phase of this nest over the past 12 + months. Let’s just say it’s bordering on too much! But now that it’s all getting down to the nitty gritty deciding phase it’s all become very tiresome and foggy. Again, budget and building restrictions {like where a window has been placed effects where I can fit the sink alongside a corner cupboard …all that sort of stuff} have all posed hurdles. I’m struggling to make decisions and struggling to feel good about the ones that I feel like I have made.
I found a gorgeous old door this week, finally a win after much searching. It’s to go in the little lounge room entry and will be a feature for the main living room. It’ll be mounted on tracks as a slider for a couple of reasons. The main one stemming from a post I did ages ago {and for the life of me I can’t find!! Note: I need to use the labels thingy more often}, on internal sliding barn doors. Like these:

I’ve loved this idea for such a long time now and had to have it somewhere in my new nest. And the second reason is because these doors save a lot of space. It means I can put furniture in the little living room where normally a door would open into it. And in this down-sized nest, space is really, really precious.
Trouble started though when I realised that the door was too short for the opening. Agh! We ummed and ahed and discussed the options. In the end though, I needed to ditch this door and re-start my search all over again. Thankfully though, my lovely builder has come up with an option which I am so very grateful to him for. His brother has an old property with a falling down building on it. The building happens to have 3 old doors just like the one I bought. Door sorted! Now I just need to find the perfect track for it to slide on. I want something fairly chunky and industrial looking.
The front door became another little issue. For the whole building process I’ve wanted my front door to be an oldie. But it needed to have lots of glass in it, and hopefully some coloured or stained glass. I have had absolutely no success in finding a door that fits the bill so I’ve ended up going for a newie {much to my builder’s joy}. Very plain and lots of glass. Similar to the only new door I had in the purple nest. Functional, practical and bla bla but characterless. Hence the reason why that old slider is so important.
Tiles! What a drama they’ve turned out to be. I think I have to say that I am not a tiles kinda gal. I struggled at the purple nest though not quite so drastically as I am struggling now. I still haven’t fully made up my mind, although my builder thinks I have. At the moment I’m thinking about creamish rectangular mosaics. White on the floor {which was a choice I made and then dropped like a hot potato a few days ago} as well as everywhere else was looking a little too clinical and harsh so I’ve opted for a softer colour on the floor but due to extremely limited options in this tiny town and my tinier budget my creamy biscuity colours are rather scant – actually there’s only one tile in the whole of Bega that comes anywhere close to it and I have it right now in my hot little hands. There’s a gazillion tiles online though none of the ones I like are within my budget plus colour is so tricky to see via an LCD screen. They have to be looked at in person and right now that’s just not an option. So, as of this nippy Saturday morning, cream mosaics are the go …. I think???
Both of the sinks in this new nest have been problematic. Woah! This has become abit of a whinge fest post. Sorry about that. Where was I??? The kitchen sink … So, it has big restrictions due to my need to have it centred on the eastern window. That in itself could have been overcome with a different kitchen layout but I’m a lover of the L-shape plan and I wanted my sink to be over a window so that’s where it goes. But, IKEA only have 2 types of corner cupboards and both of them take up too much room and encroach on my window and sink space. This means that I’m struggling to get a sink that I like that will fit centred-ish on the window. And I don’t know about your IKEA past, but I’ve had absolutely zilcho success in trying to contact IKEA via phone bar the very first time I rang them. There must be so many flipping people buying IKEA kitchens at the moment because I am always put on a waiting line and then asked to leave my number so they’ll call me back. I wait and wait and then when they finally do call me back, hours later, I happen to be out! Wish me well for my 54th call to IKEA this morning. I have a feeling I might need to leave them my mobile number this time around. Duh!
Building whinge over and out!
Oh, but I do want to say that overall I’m really loving my new little nesty shell … just in case the whinge took over a little too much back there.
Happy weekend to you!

I love it so far especially the line of the ceiling.
I can't wait to see what you come up with......

oooo its lovely kim! I love the external colour (and materials and design) and the interior is shaping up gorgeously too! .... ps I adore the idea of the sliding barn door...... now if only I had a place to plonk one here.....)
Oh Kim, your nest is beautiful. I just love it (and my husband would be happy it's made with steel - he works at the steelworks). I'm glad you've decided on the small creamy coloured tiles. I meant to offer an opinion on the tile post and never got around to it, but I wanted to say go for small tiles. We have 2 bathrooms and one has tiny little tiles and the other reasonably big - I don't know if it's the smaller tiles and increased grouting but it is so much safer to walk in. I have slipped so many times in the bathroom with big tiles, but then I do have girls who can't seem to gather that condition is meant to only go on your hair and if it's on the floor your using too much. And for some reason I can't fathom it is also a lot harder to keep the big tiles looking clean, it seems to show every speck of dust!
Ooh I love your little nest Kim, it is looking really gorgeous. That window at the front certainly makes a statement.
Good luck with your kitchen dilemma.

Oh it is beautiful! Love the front window and loving the barn door idea too :)
Your new abode is looking wonderful, somethings we thought would be temporary turned out to be semi-permanent,ha. You might as well get what you like now.
Oh Kim - architraves?? Is that what you call the lining of the eaves? we just did ours too, using mini-orb. I didn't know what they're called! ours are kind of dodgy (like most things in our house) so we're hoping people don't look up when they're underneath... x
