Some might call it making mess.
Others might see it as kids just mucking around.
Some might see it as kids wrecking stuff.
But me, I see it all as learning. Learning about the internals of a phone fax that did not survive it’s third smash onto concrete floor. Life learning.
Learning and life can’t possibly be separated.

Hi Kim,
Just before I read this I had to clean up a bowl of soggy weetbix which had been dropped in the kitchen by my 11 year old son and it went EVERYWHERE ;o)
There's just no point in getting upset......

what's also fun to learn is what all those bits and pieces ARE inside our devices ... where they come from, what their environmental and social impact is.... and mostly what NOT to touch on the inside of these - lest you make yourself really really SICK (I can't believe how many heavy metals are used in the manufacture of electronics.... and what happens if you play with these...... eeek!)
Oh Kim, I used to love doing this sort of stuff when I was a kid, gosh, who am I kidding I still do. It is so interesting to see what people use to solve problems like how paper moves through the machine and which bits have cool stuff you can salvage like magnets, springs, screws, bits of wire, LED's (although back in my day it was globes. I put them in jars - they can keep me occupied for hours. It's amazing what you can make with a battery, a bit of wood and some 'bits'. I took a 'torch' I made to school one time just made from such bits. I would be giving them a Leatherman (or some other multi-tool thing) and a magnifying glass:) I'm sure it's good for fine motor skills too.
