Nest in the Vines :: The Outside is Nearly Done!

I didn’t realise how slack I’ve been lately with my shed-I’m-  thinking-more-studio now… updates. Life’s been pretty hectic with:

the building

working at the shed/studio

organising

planning to move out

baking for the builders

keeping the new nest {the bigger one} on track with:

council DA’s,

bank loan organising,

meeting with the builder,

contracts and all that jazz,

parenting/homeschooling

all the normal running a home stuff

oh, and better not forget a couple of real, paid jobs thrown in on the side

stuff that my updating has been a little neglected.

So, here’s a big update post to fill you all in on the process so far.

So the past couple of weeks have been been majorly productive over at our little Nest in the Vines. The rush is on to get this little shed/studio ready for us to move into. We’ve given 3 weeks notice at the rental nest so it will be full steam ahead to get everything finished and paid for and all packed up and moved out…and moved in.

This is where we are up to right at this moment in time.

And yesterday the front door went on with only a couple of swear words and impatient moments from my delightful littlest brother.

Like he said, it’s a ‘scrounge up’ around here at the moment with the budget blown and the resourcefulness of my Dad and his beloved tip adventures. Thank God, literally, for my Dad and his tip passion. More on that later…

This door cost me $5.00 from the tip. I love the colour with the grey and white and did contemplate popping in some red doors within my colour scheme but I think I’ll stick to just white and grey, for now at least. It’s only paint, so very easy to change if I get sick of it.

Dad got this window from the tip. It’s mission brown but works well and fits the bathroom area better than the one I had already got.

And with a lick of White on White paint it blends in much better now than the mission brown version did.

This window, above, I got from a friend’s step-father-in law for $20.00. It needed a bit of work and a new window pane {which will happen soon} but it’s come up well, I think.

The other day it got itself a nice new timber architrave to keep it all cosy and neat. Can you guess what the archs are made from? ….Recycled packing pallets, of course. It is a ‘scrounge up’ after all;)

So, what else? ….

I’ve been sanding

and painting

and builder’s bogging {yes, there really is such a thing called Builder’s Bog! I thought it was just a tradies name for putty. The learning is everywhere, man},

IMG_4835

and no more gapping {love that stuff!}

IMG_4826

and siliconing and filling in trenches

and organising materials and generally cleaning up around the place.

Lew’s been helping out too. A great help he is. 12 year old boys are so strong and capable. And when they are willing and clad with working boots, they are a force to be reckoned with.

We’ve had the power put on at the shed and a couple of power points put in.

And the plumbing has started happening as well.

It’s all coming along nicely, regardless of the many hiccups along the way. The budget was the biggest hiccup of all. It was blown, of course, no surprises there, and we’ve been trying to become as resourceful as we possibly can be to get the place as liveable as possible. It’s been another learning curve, building always is steeped in learning and problem solving and negotiating and compromising. There’s been quite a few tears and some seriously stressful moments. There’s been  A LOT of help from my 2 lovely family guys {Dad and Tom – to whom I am eternally indebted to}. There was a time back there a bit when I thought it may not happen. I thought we’d have to ‘down tools’ and forget the whole thing. But thanks to the help and resourcefulness of my lovely Dad and brother, the shed has continued and has turned out to be a cute little space for us to hang out and dwell while the other nest, the slightly bigger one, is being built. And in the long run, it will be a money saver – no more rent!

Stay tuned for the next Nest in the Vines up date when we should be venturing inside ...

I LOVE the studio shed! So great. Especially the pitched roof {is that what they call it, that's what I'd call it = who knows?} and the grey and white.

I'm a BIG grey and white fan. My house interior is entirely grey and white.
