2011 Australian Unschooling Conference

Hey, did you know that in Australia, right now, there is an Unschooling Conference going on in the far north?

Pretty cool.

I sooo wish I was there right now. Some of my friends are there. Having fun, I’m sure. Our lovely Australian natural learning pioneer, Beverley Paine is one of the key speakers and so is Dayna Martin, from the US.

Karen, over at her blog, Mosaic Spirals is at the conference as we speak.  She has kindly committed to blogging about the whole experience each day and she’s already posted the first day’s fun and events. So  if you feel like popping on over and checking it out, you’ll be filled in with all the juicy unschooling gos. {Thanks, Karen x} Jo from Unbounded Ocean has also begun blogging about the conference. Another lucky ducky who’s there right now.

If you want to find out a little more about what unschooling is then here’s a list of places you can go to check it out:

Tea & Toast: Styled Food For Inspiration

How are you this rainy, springy Tea & Toast Tuesday?

Well, I’m sorry to say, but I’m feeling a little uninspired. When it comes to cooking in this old rental nest, I’m at a loss. I’m still feeling like I’m living in someone else’s house {well, technically I am} with that awkward feeling of trying to work it all out. The oven is a nice one. Quite new and stainless steel. It looks extremely out of place in this old, old, old house – I can’t imagine what the one it replaced looked like! And it works OK, it seems. But the whole electric thing has put me in a bit of a spin as I’ve been used to cooking with a full gas oven for the past 16 or so years. It is a very different sort of heat and it’s taking some time to get used to. Combine that with my limited unpacked kitchen utensils {the ones I swore I could live without} and my lack of love for the kitchen in this house {light on in the day kind of set up with a few cockroaches that you can see really well in the dark! Ugh!…} and you end up with one very uninspired head chef!

The sad thing is that I normally love cooking. Along with gardening, cooking is my little outlet in life {oh, and of course blogging;)}. So to lose my mojo hasn’t been all that fun.

I’m hoping though, that after today’s Tea & Toast drooly styled food fest, I’ll get my mojo back and get some inspiration happening.

So, are you ready to go on a foodie fest this morning? I hope you’re the sort of person who can handle chocolate first thing in the morning because there’ll be a few little sweet treats here in the mix. I love food styling, though I wish I was better at it. Donna Hay has definitely got the knack, don’t you think? I love those recipe books that make you want to rush out and grab as much fresh produce as you can get your hands on and start preparing a feast for the masses.

Well, that’s the sort of motivating I need right now.

My sister, Sarah, is a full on foodie, especially sweet foods. She was the inspiration behind this post today as I checked out her cute Pinterest boards yesterday. I couldn’t help but feel a little bit excited about cooking and food again. I so hope you feel it to…though I’m sure you haven’t lost your mojo like me.

Alrighty…are you ready? Pour that Tea & butter that Toast… it’s a styled food adventure ahead…

Look at this for a cute dessert idea.

For me, just seeing bunches, baskets or buckets filled with fresh fruit or vegies makes me want to rush out and prepare something yummy….

Yep, that’s a real ice cream!!!

So how do you feel after that? I think I’m feeling ready to tackle some cooking once more. Simple, fresh and healthy is going to be my plan for the rest of the week. Looks like this gorgeous cooler weather will be the perfect environment for some heavy duty soup slurping in this little old rented nest. That’s what I’m feeling like right now! Better get cracking…

Happy Tuesday!

*** Woops! This has been posted on Wednesday. Time has been so very short lately. I so hope I can get back on track soon. Happy Wednesday!

Unschool Monday: October So Far

I feel like such a slacko homeschooling Mumma of late. My recordings of Lewi’s life have been way too few and far between. My head has been filled with way too many other things like selling and moving and missing my purple nest and planning the new nest and all of those things that have been our life over the past however many months.

Thankfully though, as a natural learner/unschooler, Lewi has been learning regardless of my distractedness. Life happens and learning can’t help but eventuate in ways that can’t be planned for.

But, an unschooler needs a good facilitator to help them on their learning journey. They need a connected and interested parent/carer to create an environment that is stimulating and interesting and one that meets the learner’s needs. They need to be in the moment – present. Available.

So, this slacko Mumma is coming out of her selling/moving  chrysalis and into a more available, interested, connected one. Part of that process is to finally join along with the lovely Owlet in Unschool Monday.

our unschooling journey

Owlet is a blog about lots of lovely things but mainly it is about a Mumma sharing her life with 3 little Owlets and her husband as they unschool and create lovely things together. If you haven’t already discovered this lovely blog, then you should pop on over there and have a wander around. You’ll love it! And, if you’re an unschooling family like us, then you could also join in the fun with Unschool Monday …granted it is Thursday woops, Friday, I know, but I feel it’s better late than never to begin.

So, here’s what Lewi’s unschooling month-of-October-so-far consisted of:

Lewi made these marshmallow bunnies. We were really worried about Meily’s reactions to them. But, thankfully, she loved them…so much so that the white bunny was the first thing she devoured!

Grandma was so happy to see us. She smiled the whole time we were there and seemed so responsive to what we were saying to her. It was so lovely to see her and especially know that she seems really happy. Afterwards we visited our lovely homeschooling friends, Brad, Josh and Julie.

Lewi’s been looking after his friend, Ptolemy’s, 2 little blueys. He’s really loving it. He gives them some time outside each day and feeds and waters them. Steel seems undisturbed by their presence too which is a good thing!

Lewi’s also been:

Reading Diary of A Wimpy Kid to me

Doing 5 minute writing activities

Playing XBox

Listening to a new story CD from the library “Mirrorscape”

Catching up with Jacob and Rom and Karinya

Going for walks with Poppy

Listening to me read Deltora Quest 2: Shadowlands

Drawing, drawing, drawing

Making Claymation creatures to try our hand at Claymations {which we bought at the post office}

Computer Youtubing, surfing and playing Minecraft

So, thanks to the lovely link up over at Owlet I’m going to get back into recording the life of my unschooling boy in a more diligent and organised fashion – don’t you love link ups for that? and enjoy this life of learning and living!
