How Kids Become Readers

Children are made readers on the laps of their parents.   Emilie Buchwald

Isn’t this so true?

{I found this on Mer’s Pinterest and loved it. Thanks, Mer x}

PS Have you heard of Pinterest? It’s really cool. I’ve just started raking some interest boards. Such fun and so the thing to do for anyone into interior design and pretty things.

Pirates Of the Caribbean 4

may 2011 026

Today we went to the movies with some of our lovely home schooling friends, David and Ptolemy. I love going to the movies- the smell of popcorn, the dark, the whispering, the rustling of jaffa packets and that all too familiar neck-breaking rush to get to my favourite seat {right up the back in the left hand side corner. Love that spot!}.

Today was a little different. No rush, for a start. The majority of Australians would have already seen this movie, given that we live in this slightly slower, a little forgotten southern haven. And the other, major reason was my anxiety over having to see this movie in 3D. I know, I know. I should be thankful that our boondocks cinema has 3D but really, it’s a headachey person’s nightmare!

Those glasses are one of the most annoying pieces of facial apparatus that I’ve ever had to don. They are dark, for one thing. I kept wanting to pull them up to get a bit of light on the screen. These movies are dark at the best of times, they don’t need to go darker!

They were painful, for another. The pressure on my nose was, by about half way through the movie, starting to cause internal bleeding {I’m sure it was}. Again, I had to constantly push the glasses up off my face to relieve the pressure off my nose.

And the third issue - the whole time I worried that I’d end up with a headache from the weirdo viewing out of these hideous glasses. I couldn’t get used to it and by the end…well…I was ready for the movie to end.may 2011 028

But, besides all that, I really enjoyed the movie. Johnny Depp makes it, once again. Not as good as the others but it is number 4 so given that, I think it gets a 7.5 out of 10 from me {Lewi gave it an 8.9}.

And if you’re thinking that I was the only kill-joy, whingeing about the 3D thing, then you’d be wrong! Even the kids didn’t love it. They didn’t mind it but they weren’t jumping for joy. And David, well, he’s an oldie winger like me but he just does it on the inside {quietly!}.

What do you think of the whole 3D thing?

Yesterday

Yesterday we …

Spent much of the day with our lovely friends

may 2011 002may 2011 003may 2011 004

and enjoyed a delicious beef stroganoff lunch {thanks Mer and thanks Liss from Frills In The Hills for the recipe} together.

This was Mer’s first big, beefy cook up in a really long time. She’s been a non-hairy face eating vegetarian since she was 18 years old. Don’t you love her vego term? Hairy faced? Do you want a little more explanation? Here goes…

She wouldn’t eat anything that had hair on it’s face – so cow, sheep, pig {yes, they do have hair!}, kangaroo, horse, dog, cat, possum were all out for Mer. She had no problem chowing down fish and chicken, though. Feathers and scales posed no problem.

But she’s back now, eating hairy faces with the best of us.  Bring on her iron intake!

After our visit we rushed home to greet the lovely Rosie who has just stepped back onto Australian soil [literally!} from her trip to New Zealand. She’s come back earlier than planned to take up a head chef job for a few months over winter.

It was great to have her back and talking our heads off again, causing chaos and mayhem and adding sparkle and fun and lots of laughter. She brought goodies for us all – kiwis and magnets and stickers and a gorgeous boy necklace and beeswax lip balm and postcards of cool birds and this cute little wind up kiwi for Ov . We all loved it!

After the family headed home I decided that I wouldn’t be preparing anything that resembled a dinner. We’d eaten waaaaay too much. So instead we munched down some raw vegies and fruit and enjoyed a yummy hot chocolate by the fire. Our first for the cold season. First of many, I’m sure. Four marshmallows! What a piglet! {And a  very contented piglet I was too}.

Art Journal Sticky Beak

It’s difficult to keep up with Lewi’s art journal goings on. He draws sooooooooooooo much! So much!It feels like he shows me what he’s been working on alot but then, when I go and sticky beak inside one of his 4 art journals, I find all sorts of other wonderful creations that I hadn’t realised he’d been doing.

Here’s a peak at what I found the other day. Some of these drawings are oldies but I couldn’t help taking more photos of them. I guess because I’m a cheering-from-the-sidelines-annoyingly-proud Mumma!

****WARNING!!!! Some of this art work may disturb some viewers. Especially those viewers who are not the parents of boys. Please note: Lewi is a gentle boy who loves nature and is empathetic and lovely. Just incase his artwork gives you the impression that he’s a serial killer in the making!!!!

You’ve been warned…

These drawings are Lewi’s latest creations for a gaming concept that Brad and Josh {good friend’s of Lewi’s} and Lew have plans for.

This is something Lewi and Luca were working on. This is Luca’s enemy character for a comic book he made. Luca described the character to Lewi for Lew to draw.

This is Lewi’s character, Loopnloo, which he created for Luca’s comic book.

This drawing is in response to an ongoing debate that Lewi and his Dad have about which is more powerful – a killer whale or a great white shark. You can see Lewi’s side of the debate in this artwork…can’t you?

All of these are a series of stick figures Lewi has been working on. Jacob and Lewi both enjoy drawing these cool creations and battle scenes. Some of these photos are blurry,I know. Dodgy photographer at work, again:(
