Tea & Toast: Roughing It In Style

  • Blue and white spotty mug – check
  • Multigrain toast and honey buttered & drizzled– check
  • Tea poured – check
  • Comfy chair available – check

OK, looks like I’m ready. How about you?

My inspiration for Tea & Toast today has come from a few different sources. The first and foremost being that a friend of mine is about to live in a ger for awhile with her family on a block of land while they build their nest. That has been on my mind a lot, lately.

The other reason that roughing it has been on my mind is that Lewi keeps asking me whether we could still set something {a caravan or tent} out at our block to stay in just for a night or two every now and then. I’m so surprised that he would want to do this as he was so keen to be renting and not living in a caravan…and I also can’t believe that I, the one who does not camp, was seriously going to live in a caravan and, not only that, dreams about being on the block in a caravan or tent as opposed to renting in a house that has water proofing, sturdy walls and space! Weird!

I think there’s definitely something to be said for ‘going back to your roots’. My childhood holidays were spent either at our family’s places {which consisted of were long car trips}or camping somewhere by the coast. We never, ever stayed in motels. Sometimes we even camped, literally, by the side of the road.

Travelling to my Nan’s took quite awhile so to break up the trip we would camp half way, on the side of the road. My uncle and his girlfriend would sometimes travel in convoy with us and they’d camp alongside us, and the road. It just seems so strange now, when I think about it. But at the time it felt so normal. We’d pull up in our panel vans – Josh and I and our german shepherd dog would have free reign of the back. No seat belts. No seats! Mum used to make us up a big huge bed in the back so we’d be as comfy as could be. Our tent and roughing it gear would be piled in next to us, ready to be unpacked and set up just  on nightfall, by the side of the road. Yup! Back in the day, huh.

And the third inspiration came from this gorgeous image that I happened to stumble across recently…

It’s so Tea & Toasty, don’t you think?

So with all of that on my mind, of course I had to take you on a little camping trip this morning. We’ll be roughing it but in style…don’t worry. There’ll be hot running water somewhere and a flushing toilet as well. And I’m sure we’ll have a cute little solar set up so we can have some lovely atmospheric light to go with our camp fire. Oh, and there’ll be no spiders, I promise! All the creature comforts of home. You’ll be fine.

So are you packed and ready?

Here we go…

I don’t ever remember my hair looking like this while camping, as a kid. It was more the rat nesty look I must’ve been going for. I think they must now have solar powered hair straighteners??? I do remember the black billy can and the forked stick set up.

Wouldn’t this be lovely? So inviting.

And doesn’t this put a different light on old style ‘the food tent’?

This could be a bit cheating – I think that looks like a proper roof over head??? But still, lovely tent style.

I don’t know about you but I’m feeling pretty tent inspired right now. I think I might actually be able to do it. Must check out eBay today!

Happy Tuesday!

Hi Kim, your camping pics look oh so inviting and romantic, especially the one with fairy lights. I love the whole idea of camping, but somehow camping and I are not good friends. It never quite turns out how I expect. When I was a kid we would camp all the time and I loved it, probably because I didn't have to do all the hard work and set up. I will probably still give it a go for my sons' sake, but only VERY occassionally. Leahx

Gorgeous tents! I'd love to go camping in any one of them, but sadly would probably have to go home at night fall! We used to camp alot when I was younger, but haven't done so for years and years. There is nothing like sitting around a camp fire staring up at the starry sky. These days I'm too afraid of the snakes, spiders and bugs that come along too :)
