I love watching Lewi draw. it’s therapeutic. It makes me want to draw myself, and sometimes I do. I’m not good at it but I’m starting to feel the same sense of relaxation that Lewi gets from drawing and that I get from watching him draw.
He draws for so many reasons, though I’m not sure that he’s consciously aware of any of them. It’s such a natural part of his daily life and it’s something that he seems to not be able to live without.
He draws to express himself. He draws to create. He draws to understand. He draws to convey a message. He draws to wind down. He draws to escape. He draws simply because he loves to draw.
Here’s a drawing activity we did the other day.
Lewi chose a picture from a Shaun Tan book.
Then I photocopied it and cut out one little section of the page {which Lewi chose}.
Then I glued the little section to a blank piece of paper. Lewi then drew the rest of the picture around it.
The end product!
This was an activity that I initiated and Lewi willingly took part in. Mostly though, Lewi just draws freely and on and off throughout the day. There’s not a day goes by that he doesn’t draw. We have so many teensy tiny pencils as evidence. I can’t believe the amount of lead/graphite pencils he goes through! Such an important resource in our nest.
May there never be a shortage of pencils in the world…

I love, love, love this post!
I love that Lewi is a passionate drawer [that doesn't look right but you know what I mean].
I love that you not only encourage him, but actively support and 'play' with him.
I love Sean Tan!!! As soon as I saw the image I recognised his signature style and then I read that you guys had done the drawing and I did a double take. Then I read on a little further and knew then that you are a genius!
Did you know that Sean Tan won an Oscar recently for his animation of The Lost Thing?
I'm sure that Lewi would love to read about it here:

We didn't know that, Felicity! Thanks so much for the link. Lewi and I loved it. How exciting! He's one of Lewi's favourite writers and illustrators.
Tahnk you lots xxx
Well done Lewi and I love those tasty looking snacks. xxoo
Dawson is also passionate about drawing, it is something he does on and off throughout each and everyday and has done from when he was a toddler.
This term he did a cartooning class and absolutely thrived in it, for as long as I can remember he has wanted to make animated movies and I would say he is well on his way.
Love Lew's picture :)
