The Learning is Everywhere!

'So what do you do if you don't do book work?' they all ask.

This is the question that sooooo many people ask us when referring to Lewi and his homeschooling life. It's such a valid question ~ especially for those unaware of unschooling and life learning.

So, I thought, seen's it's January and I'm trying to get myself all bloggy organised for the year, that I'd like to have a space here where I can record Lewi's week in review and share the learning that is in his life, all day, every day. I've always recorded his day in a journal. I've always recorded pretty much everything in a journal, but Feather & Nest seems to be taking over those hand written journals {and my time!} and so I need a place here where I can put everything. I know I seem to have a lot of buttons going on over there.................................................> but it helps me feel organised and neat and tidy and that's a good thing for me to feel right now.

So, prepare for yet another button emerging called The Learning Is Everywhere!

Here goes Lewi's week in review, the first edition of The Learning Is Everywhere!

Lewi finally smashed up the gingerbread houses. He's been busting to do this for ages now. Can you tell, by the look on his face?
He found out that candy canes go really soft when they're left out in the open for a month or so. Not yum! And we wondered how sick we could get from eating jaffas and smarties that had been left out for the same length of time? {***didn't get sick...phew!} He also found out that the icing we used to hold it all together really is a glue! It was as hard as a rock, still. Good old sugar.
january 2011 007Lewi took this photo of a wattle bird in our apple tree. It had been making the most amazing song...noise...bird call?

Breasy came to stay for the night. She brought with her this amazing popcorn. We couldn't get enough of it. Sweet and salty ~ weird but yum!
january 2011 009 january 2011 008january 2011 014 january 2011 015 While Breasy was here, Lewi found another baby blue tongue. This one was found in a totally different area to the last one and was much more feisty and active. It didn't really enjoy being measured and wouldn't stay still. We think it was just under 14 cm long.

The 3 of us played The Very Bad Game. The freakiest thing happened. Lewi was one square away from winning the game {Breasy and I were miles away}. I had just got off the highway and picked up my pet's head. The next roll was to pick up a Very Bad Card. It said: Go Home. Don't ask why. Just go. Woo hoo. I'd won. just like that. We all squealed because it was the weirdest thing to win, just like that. Normally I'm never that excited to win but today was a freaky thing.

Lewi did lots of drawing this week, as per usual. Jacob and Lew worked on their stick figure teams that they've been creating lately. Both at our place and Jake's. They had a couple of plays together.
january 2011 064Lewi's eBay purchase arrived. So play Spore...he did! Creating, battling, exploring, achieving, developing, evolving...all this and more with Spore! {did you like that?}

Sarah and the kids came over. They played their funny 'kill the teddy' games.
january 2011 131 We went to a birthday lunch at Rae and Rom's. Lewi and Rom played on the computer doing lots of Moshi Monsters, studying the cheats codes for Moshlings.
january 2011 137We learned that picked artichokes, sitting in fruit bowls for long times can also flower...just like that.
january 2011 024
We went to Pepperberry with Sarah, Meily and Ov. Lewi also bought a new Moshi book from Mer's shop. january 2011 140Dona and Taj came over for a play. The boys picked the carrots and nibbled away. Weird carrots this year.
january 2011 005 january 2011 013Lewi caught a praying mantis. It was about to jump onto his face in that photo!
 january 2011 036 january 2011 040 january 2011 041 january 2011 042
We went to the river and met Rae and Rom there. The kids had fun floating down the rapids and trying to swim against them. Two water babies! {Lew & Rom, that is}.
What else??? Lots of reading of Lew's favourite book at the moment: The Natural History Book; reading Deltora: The Valley of the Lost, lots of drawing and listening to the Toad series on story tape, some blogging. We looked up Morris Gleitzman's site again {something we do from time to time} and read through the emails that fans had sent Morris. We laughed at some of them. Lewi sent an email too. I tried to get him to say that his mum wanted to ask a question about when his new book was coming out but he refused to put that bit in because Morris said in his intro blurb that he couldn't personally answer questions. Always wanting to do the right thing, our Lew. Watched Meet The Fockers again and again. Spent time on the computer. Hung out with Steel. Trampolined. Walked. Talked and talked and talked!
And in amongst all of that I can see Lewi's spelling improving as his need for writing and typing increases. His reading is improving, for the same reason. Spore has been great for that. It's all there, nicely embedded in life. Natural and self-directed. Purposeful learning.
A nice week.

Amazing what you can fit in a week, isn't it!?

I hope one day we get to come to visit you guys - my husband is a herpetologist, about to start a research project on lizards across Australia(based at Uni Adelaide - we move to Adelaide in 6 weeks! Will be sad to leave Tassie though!), and Kai has inherited both of our passions for natural history - i think Lewi would get a massive kick out of going in the field with Brett!

I'll see if Brett's going to have any study sites in NSW!! Will you guys go to the Unschooling Conf in Oct/Nov?

How cool! Lewi was so excited when I told him what your husband does. He sure would love to go out on the field with Brett. That would be sooo great. We didn't make it to the conference last year. It's so far away...though it' even further for you. And the time of year isn't going to be great. So not sure if we'll get there this year but will try.
Would be lovely to meet you guys too:)
