davidmetnicole

Weird story...yesterday I was going through my many, many magazines, pulling out pages for my mood board-making and interior design  ideas folder, when I came across some gorgeous photos {via Real Living magazine} of a nest I remember loving awhile ago when I first read this edition of the  mag. As difficult as I find  tearing out pages of my magazines {some of my friends know how freaky I am about it} tear and tear I did. I  felt the need to keep the pages separate in my folder for future reference.

That wasn't weird...blabbering, but not really weird. Here's the weird bit...

This morning, doing some cyber space research I came across this gorgeous shop in Surrey Hills, Sydney called davidmetnicole. On looking through their amazingly gorgeous vintagey bits and pieces I tried to grab some photos to show you {with the intent, of course, to credit them etc etc}. Their site wouldn't let me {fair enough} so I did a spot of googling. On finding some photos of their shop here www.apartmenttherapy.com and here  Pretty Little World I literally 'fell' over some blogs which also refer to David and Nicole's nest.  On having a closer look I realised that these were the same amazing people who I'd pulled from the covers of Real Living only several hours before. Very exciting! A little weird?

So, after blabbing the boring intricate details of my mundane page pulling experience {not mundane to me...quite exhilarating and inspiring actually, but I'm freaky, I know} and weird encounter, here are the pics. I think you're going to drool away. I love this look. It's  got a name now: 'British Style' which I think is apt and which I will be surely posting about in the future. I think I need to do a mood board on this style. I'm loving it. It might just be my new favourite style??? I'm so fickle to change...as long as it's got vintage somewhere within it's framework, I'm in!

OK, here you go...love, love, love!

Nicole and David and their shop, first of all...

I've never seen such a wonderful and full collection of vintage printing blocks, letters and numbers. You can have a much closer look at them all at their website davidmetnicole. Gorgeous!!!!!!!

Pretty Little World

Now for their nest...

If you go here  http://greigedesign.blogspot.com/2010/07/david-met-nicole-at-home.html  you'll find these photos below of David and Nicole's  nest. I've put them below so you don't have to wait a second more. But definitely go over to this lovely blog and check it out:)

Did you love it? How gorgeous is that style? So eclectic and vintagey and  bohoey really  but it's called British style....remember that. You'll see it everywhere  there's a union jack. Something I actually own myself now. Oohhh, that's got me thinking...change is a coming...again!

Farewell, Oh Wonderful Winter

Ok, well it's time for me to face the music -tomorrow being the  last day of winter and all. You've probably gathered from previous posts that I LOVE winter A LOT! I love layered clothes and crackling fires and wood piles and kindling and bare branches and frosty mornings and cooler days and early nights and flannos and lots of cups of  tea and walking without a hoard of flies sticking to my back and sweat pouring out of my pores. I love being able to do all my physical work in the garden. So many jobs get done in the winter, though never as many as I'd like. But, I can also face reality and will try to look positively at the next new season...Spring.

I know everyone loves spring. No one has  ever said to me that they hate spring. OK it is  a beautiful time of year for sure and I must focus on the positives. Unfortunately my feelings are always mixed as spring comes along. On the one hand I love the beautiful freshness in the air and the new buds promising growth and life after their wintery snooze. I love eating outside in the warm, gentle sun....that is until it gets so hot I have to go inside and stop melting.

The trouble with spring is that summer is after it. I worry about summer every year. Is it going to be a hot one? Will we get any rain? Will the air con break down? Can I cope with another summer? It's never really as bad as my fears would have me believe. I always get through it...just.

Anyway, this year, instead of going through spring with the fear of summer flooding my every waking thought I will try to be thankful for each and every day. I will try to cherish the positives of spring...and yes, there are many.

So this post is a tribute and acknowledgement that spring is upon us, winter is all but over {sob, sob, sniff, sniff}. Outdoor eating is a lovely, lovely thing to do and something I enjoy all times of the year but it is especially lovely this time of year. I hope you enjoy some outdoor loveliness here...

Pruning ~ Just in Time

august 030august 031august 032

Phew! I finally made it...just in time. Pruning of roses should really be done in July but I NEVER do it then...NEVER! As much as I love the actual task of pruning {hacking things with a sharp implement is extremely therapeutic} I always find it challenging. I love the wild and 'neglected' look of my plants when they are let free. I especially love how the Pierre de Ronsard's look when they are wild. They get soooo big and bushy and rambling.

Last year I didn't touch them. It was an experiment. Margaret Sirl {my Bega gardening guru} said that they could handle being left and I should just tie down the big long ones so that they shoot upwards and produce flowers that way. I did that last year and all was well. The flowers were just as prolific as the year before, when I'd pruned.

This year though, I thought I'd go for the hacking. I hacked like a crazy person and have ended up with this:

   august 033 august 034

Now I know exactly how Lewi feels after he's had a hair cut. He always hates going to the hairdresser. He hates it for the next week after as well. He hates the naked feeling of no hair covering his ears. He hates the uncomfortable feeling of people noticing he's had a haircut. He hates the little spiky bits of hair that are always left on his shirt even though we brush them and dust them off before he leaves the salon. He misses his old hair. He finds it hard to adjust to less and bareness and shortness. He looks forward to the day that his hair will grow back again and he feels 'normal' again. {You may be wondering why he doesn't grow his hair long? Because he also hates the feeling of hair in his face and knots at the back when he gets out of bed in the morning. He hates the 'hotness' in summer of thick hair...it's hard to find the balance}.

That's exactly how I feel right now. My house is standing out like a big purple, sore thumb. The roses softened the lines of the building but now there is nowhere to hide. The nakedness of the front is sooo stark. No leaves. No softness. No rambling. No messiness {funny how I don't mind messy plants in the garden but can't stand mess inside nor on the lawn??}. Just bare thorny sticks and purpleness.

I can't wait until the leaves re-appear and those flowers power on. All i can say is, they'd better.

august 035 I know, I know...I could have kept going. I have left the bits in the middle that you're supposed to chop off. But...I felt I'd done enough damage. I soooo hope these roses make it through OK...

More Bunting, Love!

To my surprise, driving along a dusty, dirt road  in the heart of the Rocky Hall valley, was this bunting hanging in all it's glory on a rusted barbed wire fence.

Bunting Rocky Hall style!

I must ring Lynda and tell her to get making...don't you think it'd sell like hot cakes at the markets???

Bonsai Fun

What an adventure we had yesterday.

The journey began for us in little old Bega. Then  Lewi and I travelled to the Powell's lovely nest in the Candelo hills and then exchanged our white steed for the lovely black Honda.

We all piled into the Powell's car and off we went together in search of our natural learners group in the heart of the valley, somewhere out yonder. Travelling along the back roads, the kids chatted and laughed and so too did Nicole and I, having our  usual merry banter, forgetting momentarily, that neither of us are great with directions and finding our way. We  both admit that, growing up,  we were no girl guides!

On looking up {you know that moment you have when you can't remember if you've been looking out at the scenery or had your head in the clouds while driving or being a passenger?}... I suddenly I remembered that we had no idea where we were going and hadn't yet bothered to read the directions! Woops! I quickly read the instructions Dona had given us and found that we were on the right track...so far so good. Phew.

All was going well until we passed the  bridge. Dona's instructions told us to turn right after the bridge. We drove and drove. There was nowhere to turn right. We drove and drove some  more. Thankfully for our kidlets, Nicole and I had forgotten, after awhile,  that we were supposed to be looking for a right hand turn. When we eventually came to and realised that we'd been driving for quite awhile and nothing on the right had come up for, perhaps, too many, dusty kilometres, we momentarily freaked.

Here's a little sample of the conversation between Nicole and I and the kids at that time:

"Help!"

" Do we turn back?"

" What do you think?"

" This doesn't look right?"

"Did we miss the turn?"

" We must have missed the turn?"

" Have we been concentrating?"

" No, we haven't been concentrating!"

" Aggh!"

" No more laughing, Nicole. We must focus."

" We must get the kids there alive and safe and...not lost."

"MUUUUUM! We're going to die!!!!!"

" OK, I'll look for a place to turn around."..........

..........."Oh...that bridge???"

In our ever so slight panic and lack of quick turning around decision-making we'd realised that up ahead was the actual bridge we had supposed to be looking for...not, it seems, the first, much smaller one miles back. Phew again.

From that point on, as a self-designated navigator and reader-of-directions, I focussed and read and re-read and read again, Dona's directions. I became diligent beyond belief. I was focussed. We'll make it there alive kids, I promise. I must say, my focus did waiver slightly though, when Nicole pumped up her favourite ABBA song {When I Kissed The Teacher....she's not sure why she's always loved that one. I was concerned!!} and began singing loudly and dancing at the wheel - Lynda would know exactly how I may have been feeling at that moment - don't you Lynda? Thankfully the windy, narrow roads and kids becoming a little restless in the back brought Nicole back to her senses and she grabbed the wheel with determination and focus and...to my relief, two hands.

As we realised that we were definitely on the right track and that our destination would soon be upon us we began to relax and notice our surroundings a little more. What a pretty valley! And look, manikins, heaps of them, all dressed up!

This scene most definitely caused us to pull over and snap a photo or two.

august 043 What a surprise. So cool. And fun. In the absolute middle of nowhere, these manikins are set up, all dressed up, in a paddock, facing the road.

A little further along and we had made it!

We pulled into the driveway of our destination, ever so thankful to have made it and not missed anything. Actually, Nicole was a little panicky as she has the opposite phobia to me...she doesn't like being early! HIHIHIHIHIIIIII. She had forgotten that  she'd been travelling with an early freak who has a phobia about being late and we'd arrived 10 minutes early!

As we all fell out of the car, relieved to have made it in one piece,  the tranquillity of our destination gently blanketed us like a fine and comforting mist. Agh the serenity!

The worries of our being lost {and mine of being  late!} quickly vanished as we became immersed in the gorgeousness of this setting.

We were then warmly greeted by the owners of the property and lovely hosts of our Bonsai experience, Pushpa and Vads.

These guys were the most lovely hosts, making the kids feel quickly at ease and in love with their surroundings and the beautiful Japanese style garden that enveloped the stone and mud brick nest where Pushpa and Vads live.

After some settling in time and meanderings around the garden...

....Pushpa began his wonderful Bosai demonstration. august 078

He showed us how to make a bonsai from beginning to end. august 080He told us how to care for a bonsai and what sorts of plants make the best bonsais.  august 082 august 106august 105

Taj had bought along a bonsai that Dona had bought awhile ago. It was in need of some TLC and fixing up. Pushpa did just that:)

Once it was time to put the finishing touches on the potted up plant, Pushpa asked us all to help him look for some moss to add to the pot. Off we went in search of naturally growing moss. august 083

august 086

The kids helped Pushpa find and excavate the moss and collect it for Taj's lovely bonsai.

Pushpa then showed us around one of the two bonsai nurseries that he painstakingly runs. Bonsais everywhere! It was amazing to see so many plants in one area. The work that Pushpa must have to put in to grow these beautiful plants astounds me.

august 092 After a look at the nursery we brought the moss back to be added to Taj's bonsai.

august 101

Voila! Doesn't it look fantastic?

Every child and adult was enthralled at Pushpa's enthusiasm for bonsais. It was contagious. Now we all want a bonsai {Lewi has wanted one for awhile now} and we were so happy to hear that privets make fantastic bonsai trees. We've certainly got plenty of those!      august 110

Unfortunately Myoung, Luca and Anise made it a little late. They had thought what Nicole and I had thought at the first bridge and had turned around thinking they'd gone the wrong way . Woops!august 108   Some of the lovely bonsais.

august 112 This one isn't a maple, as I'd first thought. It's actually ivy growing up some dead mangrove wood. Doesn't it look amazing?august 113august 114  Thank you so much, Pushpa and Vads. We had a truly wonderful, wonderful day. From the bottom of our hearts we thank you for sharing some of your lives with us and for allowing us to visit your gorgeous nest, deep in the heart of the Bega Valley.

You have so inspired us by your love of Bonsai and we will certainly have a good go at it ourselves. We may need to come back next year for some extra little tips;)

Thank you also for mentioning the 2 arty constructions along the road that we had previously missed on our way in. We stopped and took photos of them as we passed. So cool!

A naked lady! {The person who did the manikins also did these fantastic art works. He is an artist and knows how to have fun. So cool!}

august 120

On the way home I also captured this loveliness. Who would have thought....bunting! Barbed wire fence undies bunting! I must ring Lynda. She'll be so please with my newest ideas for her wonderful craftiness.

On arriving back to the Powell's nest we enjoyed a much needed cuppa and the kids had some computer fun. We thoroughly enjoyed our Bonsai experience and can't wait to make our own little bonsais.

What a lovely, lovely day we all had.

We are so blessed to be homeschooling in this beautiful, beautiful valley we call home xx
