Art Class With Mister Jones

On a crisp, frosty morning we trekked off through the Bega Valley to Bermagui for a day of art with the lovely Matt Jones.art lesson June 2010 003

While we were all trekking north in our toasty warm cars, Matt trekked off to his studio to meet us there, on his funky vintagey, freezing cold bike.

Contrast was the theme of today's art class. The kids took charcoal and had to draw lines all over their brown paper. Each line had to be different from the one before it. They drew light lines and dark lines, thick lines and thin lines, jagged lines and straight lines. Lots and lots of contrasting lines.

They also took an eraser and drew lines with it over the top of their charcoal creations.

art lesson June 2010 016Matt asked the kids if their hands were dirty yet. Once their hands were filthy with charcoal they were then able to use their fingers and hands to make lines on their paper.

Next, the kids had to draw shapes with charcoal. Contrasting shapes all over the paper.

After a lovely and busy morning session we went off to have a well-earned lunch break and play at the park. I also had to pop into one of my favourite little shops - The Pineapple House. How could I resist?

When we finished lunch it was back to Mister Jones for the afternoon art class.  Matt took a long strip of brown paper and stuck it to the floor. The kids then took charcoal and drew contrasting lines and shapes on the page. Matt asked them to stop and move to another spot along the paper, throughout the activity.

Then the kids added some white chalk to their work. Then an eraser. Then some white paint.

Then they stuck torn up bits of old road maps randomly onto the paper.art lesson June 2010 018

   Doesn't it look fantastic!

Next, Matt took another big, long strip of brown paper and stuck it to the floor. He then asked the kids to grab some charcoal and draw some lines and then shapes on the paper.

Next came some colour. The kids then turned the artwork  into a road and added street scapes and landscape pictures to the charcoal drawings. Cars, apple trees, castles, funky houses, wetlands and forests appeared like little coloured jewels on the black and brown background.

What a  great day. The kids had so much fun creating wonderful abstract art. Lewi really got into the spirit of the artist's passion - he was covered, from head to toe, with charcoal. Today I've had the pleasure of washing his art clothes. The little black charcoal spots that remain, all over his pants, will be a lovely reminder of the fun we had at Mister Jones.

Thanks again, Matt:)

Frosty June Morning

This morning (29th June, 2010) it is freezing in the Bega Valley - literally!

I'm always up early - anywhere from 4am onwards. I know, it's freaky but I actually enjoy the quiet of those early hours. Plus I'm not doing it on purpose, my brain just wakes up early;)

I love this time of day. Bega is still asleep and I feel like I own the place. The garden, early in the morning, is a special place to be in. It's so still and tranquil. Normally though, at this time in the morning, I'm sitting at my computer, by the fire, typing and blogging away. I'm definitely never out in the frosty air. This morning though I felt the need to capture a little bit of the winter love.

I trudged out in my pink dressing gown and crocs - a sight to be hold - clicking away at the frost bitten plants in my vegie patch. Once again, I wish I had some photographic skills. It's hard to capture the strength of this morning's frost (the biggest we've had this winter, so far). I tried.

Here are some snaps I took a few minutes ago. No self-respecting tomato could survive this one...

A wild beast in the frosty glades....

Blackboards

As much as my allergy to dust causes me grief when I'm anywhere near a blackboard (teaching wasn't probably the best occupation for me) I LOVE the look of blackboards in nests. I'd love to have some more blackboard space - maybe in the rumpus where Lewi could use it as a creative writing and recording tool? Maybe near the back door so we don't forget why we are stepping outside in the first place? Maybe in the kitchen where we can list all of the supplies we need that so quickly get forgotten and replaced my necessities like chocolate coated licorice and sour worms? Maybe in the study where we could put a cool looking calendar for organising our lives? Maybe in Lewi's room where he can create and design til his hearts content?

The only one we have at the moment is on the verandah. It's got a cute a cafe look to it. I got it at a garage sale for a $1.00 and have finally hung it up. It seems to take me forever to hang things on walls. I must get a list of quotes to regularly write on it. If you've got any good ones, please pass them onto me xx

The rage at the moment is to have a blackboard in the kitchen. They look great as a splashback or on the side of an island bench, at kids height. They look fantastic on a cupboard door or even as a whole wall. Black being the new brown, is definitely helping the blackboard movement.

Has anyone tried dustless chalk? Is it really dustless? Please let me know...

Have a look and see if you think some of these ideas could work in your nest.
