A Mum Interviews Her Son About Unschooling

Tell me 3 things that you like about unschooling?
Not having to feel the stress of having to get up and pack my bags and get driven to school.
I like being at home.
I like to be able to spend most of my time doing what I want.

Tell me what you like to do during the day?
Going outside on the trampoline. Catching lizards (and letting them go). Spending time listening to story CDs, reading books. Being with my pet blue tongue lizard, Steel. Drawing. Going on the computer. And lots more.

Tell me what you like on the computer at the moment?
Moshi Monsters. Club Penguin. Looking at a range of Wikipedia's like Star Wars, Super Mario and Halo ones. Web Face. Marvel Hero Creator and a much more detailed one called Hero Machine.

What are some of the books you like at the moment?
Shaun Tan's The Bird King. Australian Fish Guide. Halo Encyclopedia. A Practical Guide to Monsters. Dangerous Animals. Drawing and Painting Fantasy Beasts. Drawing and Painting Fantasy Figures. Anatomy for Fantasy Artists. Vampires, Werewolves and Zombies. The Illustrated Animal Encyclopedia. The Deltora Quest Series. The Rowan of Rin series. The Rondo series. Morris Gleitzman's books. Andy Griffith's books. Marc McBride's drawing books. Monsterology (also by Marc McBride).

What do you do when you're not at home?
Go to my friends' places. Go to home schooling groups. Visit my family like Sarah and Gerard and Meily and Ov and Nan and Pa and Breasy. going to the beach. Having a melting moment and chocolate milkshake at Pepperberry. Going to the library. Visiting shops that I like.

What do you like about your home schooling group?
Playing  with my friends. Going to places like the Bega museum, the aquarium, the Marine Discovery Centre, Mandini, the beach and Spencer Park.

Do you have friends who aren't homeschooled?
Yes.

What do they think of you homeschooling?
Jacob would probably like me to go to his school but he's happy with me homeschooling anyway. Rommily likes me homeschooling but, like Jacob, I reckon she'd want me to come to her school as well. Actually, most of my friends think their school is pretty good and they want me to go there but a couple of friends would like to homeschool and don't like their school because they've been bullied.

What do you want to be when you grown up?
A marine biologist.
An artist.
An illustrator for computer animation.

Is there anything else you want to say?
Yes! I want to talk about my pet blue tongue, Steel.

Tell, tell...
I got Steel from a blue tongue lizard breeder for my 10th birthday. I have had him for nearly a year. He's my favourite pet and I take him out of his enclosure every day and for most the day when I'm at home.
I also want to talk about Moshi Monsters. It's by far my favourite game on the computer. My user name is LoopnLoo and my monsters' name is Electrofuzz. It is a katsuma. For those who don't know about Moshi Monsters: a katsuma is sort of a cross between a rabbit and a cat. They are very cool. My katsuma is black with yellow stripes and red eyes.
In Moshi Monsters you can plant seeds that attract little creatures called Moshlings. My favourite Moshling is Squidge. Squidge is a flying puff ball with purple wings and it looks like a vampire bat.
You can also go down to the shops and buy things for your monsters room and you can also buy costumes to dress your monster in.

For another dose of unschooling insight, check out Sususuma (Mer's blog) for Suhan's unschooling thoughts. If anyone else would like to send a link to their child's unschooling or homeschooling thoughts please do so and I'll post them here. It'd be so lovely to share, share, share!

Thankyou, Lewi, for allowing me to interview you and for sharing some of your unschooling life with some people in cyber space xxx
