It's Got A Name!

I've just stumbled upon the actual name for the style of buildings I'm loving at the moment {this latest obsession has been growing for quite sometime}.

The Welsh Longhouse.

I've been describing it as 'English barny-style' with a pointy roof and minimal eaves' so it's nice to know that it has a name and I can use the correct term from now on.

Here are some Welsh Longhouses {some original, some based on the original but with a modern edge} to drool over...

The Long House

Here's an explanation of what a longhouse is ~

"long house or longhouse is  a type of long, proportionately narrow, single-room building built by peoples in various parts of the world including Asia, Europe and North America.

Many were built from timber and often represent the earliest form of permanent structure in many cultures."

I think my preference is definitely the Welsh version!

What's your favourite nesty shape?

Yes this IS my obsession too BUT in reality I think I will be forced to do more eaves or some sort of verandah? Just thinking of the north-facing side. Have you seen any pictures of longhouses with shade?

Third from the bottom I have found Isle of Skye and I want to do something like it on a smaller scale!

Hey Mer,

Yes love that one! Yes definitely will have something on the north side. The best look, so far that I can come up with, is a pergola look but with some cover on the roof (maybe in the middle section. If it doesn't go the full length of the house I think it could look good. Will have a look for some pics...
