Poppy Buds & Clinkers

Have you ever popped the bud of a poppy flower before it's bloomed? This is something that I remember doing a lot as a child. It was a truly 'Clinkers' experience for me. You know, when you bite into a Clinker and you're hoping for yellow or pink {and not the disgusting green ones} and you try to guess what it's going to be before you sink your teeth in? Only with the poppy buds, you don't bite them {are they toxic???}, instead you squeeze them gently between your fingers and the surprise of petals inside unfolds to reveal the beautiful coloured flower that was waiting to be slowly opened by the sun and rain and air. Woops! I always hoped for the yellow ones. Oh how my gardening palette has changed.

My mum was never wrapped in me doing this to her flowers, though she didn't complain too much. She was a loving and patient mum. I'd be extremely upset if Lewi did this to my poppies. Come to think of it ~ I don't have any. I need a good parental talking to, don't I? Spoiling a perfectly good childhood experience by not having poppy's to pop and not complaining about it.

** Note to self ~ buy some Poppy seeds for winter next year and show him how to pop the early buds and DO NOT complain about it when he does it.

Have you got a childhood garden memory? I'd love you to share it with us.

Go yellow, go pink! Please...let it not be green. URK!

Oh, I used to do this ALL THE TIME. My nanna and pop had poppies and I'd love opening them to sneak a peek (just a wee one). I still adore poppies, although the ones I love the most are opium poppies with their incredible shaggy blooms {sadly illegal, but you can find them in display gardens, their pods are also beautiful}

My childhood garden memories are all in my Grandmother's garden in Sydney. I spent hours climbing all the way to the top of her liquid amber tree. And she had camellias and those white, waxy-petalled nice-smelling flower trees...what are they called... and I spent hours in the rockery skipping and hopping over mossy rocks, trying not to squash the little flowers.

My Mother always had the red peony poppies in her garden. I loved them so much, I would never had dreamed of popping the heads! Of course they were all red, so I knew what color in advance. Beautiful pics by the way!

I love Opium poppies too:) Flanders poppies are my favourite at the moment. Must plant some.

Mer, your Grandma's garden sounds gorgeous. Was that Granny's garden or a different grandma?

I love your poppies, Sue Ann. I wish they could be sent to Australia:( I'd love some in my garden.

I never had a poppy popping moment as a child (wahhh). I must see if I can find some to prematurely pop in a neighbours garden! Like you, I wasn't fond of the green clinker. Urgh! Thanks for Rewinding this post x
